It was Francis of Assisi who said, “Preach the Gospel always and if necessary use words.” This is a famous quote and it is true that at times we need to show our witness rather than speak our witness. However, the whole idea behind Spirit-filled-speech is, well… speech. The problem lies in this: We too often speak out of our own minds rather than through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. You can be the Christian person in society who truly follows Christ in your actions, but what I think we often miss is that even Jesus had to speak the words of life. Even Jesus, who did all the miracles of the gospels, had to speak the gospel message as well. We are instructed by the Word of God to be “doers of the word” (James 1:22). But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you can do both. You can Do the works of the Holy Spirit and Say the words of the Holy Spirit as well. When they both work together, you will be the victorious over-comer God has called you to be.
