Have you ever been given a job to do but no tools with which to do it? It would be like me telling my son to go mow the lawn, but not letting him use the mower to do so. I guess he could try other tools like hedge clippers or trimmers. But sometimes doing the right job with the wrong tool is worse than not doing the job at all. The good news is that Jesus did not command us to do a job without giving us the opportunity to have the perfect tools with which to accomplish the task.
Paul tells us in 1st Corinthians that over 500 people saw Jesus at one time before he ascended into heaven. Likely, it was at the ascension where these 500 people all saw him together. Jesus told them to go to Jerusalem and wait for the promised Holy Spirit. I always thought it curious as to why so many of them heard him say this, but on the day of Pentecost there were only 120 in the upper room. All of them had been given the command to wait. All of them heard that they would be receiving power after the Holy Spirit would come upon them. They all heard that they all were to be His witnesses to the far ends of the earth. But only 120 of them stuck around for the promise that came just a short ten days later.
Are you going to be one of those who sticks around or are you going to be one of the 380 who got tired of waiting, waned in their faith and maybe even began to doubt the very words of Jesus? You can try and do the job He’s called you to on your own, but in reality, it’s like trying to mow the lawn with the hedge clippers. God has called you to reap a harvest for His Kingdom. Receive the free gift of tools Christ has for you through the Holy Spirit today.
